Price: £245.00

Our 8 week introduction to dressmaking course includes patterns for 4 items.  The majority of sewers are able to complete all 4 items during the course, but only with some homework.  If you are a slow and steady sewer with limited time between classes to carry out pattern prep (full tuition for this will be provided!) and don't have access to a sewing machine to make up any time necessary, you may decide to aim to complete 3 garments during the course, taking the 4th pattern home to do at your leisure - if you think you fall into this category we can talk about which garments you would like to complete in class and which ones you want to tackle at home at a later date, before we start the course.

The fabric for week 1 is included in the price but you will need to provide the fabric, zips and buttons for weeks 2-8, we will provide all other materials.

You can choose from a range of patterns we hold here at sewing school in sizes 0-26, or bring your own.

Week 1-2 - Skirts

  • You can choose between a classic a-line skirt or wrap.
  • We will cover reading patterns, making pattern pieces, cutting fabrics, seam finishes, simple zip insertion.

Weeks 2-3 - Tops Made to Fit

  • You can choose between a simple vest top or short sleeve top.
  • Skills covered will include getting the perfect fit and more seam finishes.

Week 4-5 - Shorts/Trousers

  • You can choose between shorts, trousers and PJ bottoms.
  • Skills covered will include sewing lapped zips, interfacing and buttonholes.

Week 6-8 - The Dress

  • You can choose to make a reverse wrap dress, classic shift or cocktail dress, or bring your own pattern.
  • We will be consolidating all the skills covered earlier in the course whilst making a staple dress for your wardrobe.

WHO:  Classes are kept to a maximum of 4 people, if you have your own sewing machine you are encouraged to bring it, there is nothing like learning on your own machine (or you can use one of ours).  Although all skill levels are welcome we don't recommend this course for absolute beginners, trying to learn about pattern cutting and adjusting at the same time as getting to grips with the sewing machine would be stressful!  You don't need lots of experience, or even recent experience, but you need to be familiar with sewing.  If you are completely new to sewing we recommend starting with our 5 week introduction to sewing course, or at least completing one of our other single session workshops to get comfortable with a sewing machine. IMPORTANT:  patterns used fit up to a UK size 24.

WHAT: Over 8 weeks you will make a range of projects, each designed to build your skill base, from basic stitches and pattern cutting, to choosing and using interfacing, sewing with zips and adding buttonholes.

WHERE: Courses are held in Duckington, just outside of Witney, or Witney itself.

WHEN: Available dates are shown above - If you can't make it to the dates shown, why not consider signing up for a one to one or many course - click here to find out more.

Payment is required at the point of booking your place on one of our workshops or sewing courses.

In you need to cancel up to 3 weeks before the start of the class,we will offer you the choice of transferring to another date, or a refund minus a £15 cancellation fee (if we manage to sell the place this reduces to £5).

If you need to cancel within 3 weeks of the start date, we are sorry but we cannot offer you a refund or transfer.  With less than 3 week's notice it is difficult for us to fill places and it isn't fair on other people who would have liked a place, had they had more notice. We can put you on a reserve list for a future date, and if we still have spaces 3 weeks before the start of a course, we will slot you in at no additional cost.

If you are unable to attend one of the sessions, for any reason, then you can choose to complete the missed work at home, by coming earlier to future sessions, or by booking a 'catchup session' - catchup sessions are mixed sessions run a minimum of 4 times a year, where people who missed part of a course that was more than a single session long, can bring their project and complete their work - the cost for a place on a catchup session is £25 per person.
