How Much Should I Order?

How much such I order/which cut do I need ?

We offer a wide range of cuts at Prints to Polka Dots, giving you greater choice, the ability to buy just what you need, and the opportunity to have your fabrics arrive pre-cut into a range of popular size squares, rectangles and triangles, saving you hours of cutting.

Using this service you can make your own Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, Charm Packs and Quilt Packs.

Whilst we believe this range of cuts enhances your shopping experience it can be bewildering when you first make an order, and so we have produced this handy guide to help you work out which cut suits your needs best.

Standard Cut – Inches

Orders for standard cuts are cut from the bolt, for every x1 you order we increase the overall size of the piece of fabric sent to you, rather than the number of pieces sent to you.

If you order x1, you will receive a ‘fat quarter’ measuring 22” wide x 18” long.

If you order x 2, you will receive 1 piece measuring 44” wide x 18” long.

From this point on, for every  x1 you add, we add 9” to the overall length of the fabric.  See the table below for further examples, the amount you can order is only limited by our stock level.

x1      22” wide       x      18” long                    x7          44” wide           x      63” long

x2      44” wide       x      18” long                    x8          44” wide           x      72” long

x3      44” wide       x      27” long                    x9          44” wide           x      81” long

x4      44” wide       x      36” long                    x10       44” wide           x      90” long

x5      44” wide       x      45” long                    x11       44” wide           x      99” long

x6      44” wide       x      54” long                    x12       44” wide           x      108” long

Standard Cut – Cms

As with the Standard Cut – Inches, standard cuts in cms are cut from the bolt, for every x1 you order we increase the overall size of the piece of fabric sent to you, rather than the number of pieces sent to you.

If you order x1, you will receive a ‘fat quarter’ measuring 55cm wide x 50cm long.

If you order x 2, you will receive 1 piece measuring 110cm wide x 50cm long.

From this point on, for every  x1 you add, we add 25cm to the overall length of the fabric.  See the table below for further examples. The only limit on the amount you can order, is our stock level.

x1      55cm wide       x      50cm long                            x7          110cm wide         x      175cm long

x2      110cm wide     x      50cm long                            x8          110cm wide         x      200cm long

Ric Rac

Now you don’t have to stop your creativity when it gets to the finishing touches, you can even get ric rac in your choice of fabrics!

We cut ric rac in strips measuring 44”wide x 1.5” long.  You can buy strips cut off the bolt, or buy it ready washed and with heat n bond adhesive attached so you can just iron it into place!

NB: Image shows 2 strips side by side.

Squares

We currently offer:

2.5” squares, which, using a ¼” seam allowance, gives you a finished size of 2” (5cm) squares.

5” pinked squares, which, with a ¼” seam allowance, gives you a finished size of 4.5” (12cm) squares. These can be used with our triangles to create endless patterns and shapes as 4 triangles also give you a 4.5” finished square.

8.5” squares, which, after a ¼” seam allowance, make 8” finished squares.

10" squares, which, after a 1/4" seam allowance, make 9.5" finished squares.

Rectangles

Rectangle are cut using our specialist die, cutting accurate shapes time after time.  We currently offer one rectangle size, 6.5” x 3.5” (17cm x 9cm).  Assuming a ¼” seam allowance, this gives you a finished size of 6” x 3” (15.2cm x 7.6cm).

Just add the number you need to your basket.

Triangles

We have two triangle sizes, a small triangle for quilting and a large triangle which we call the bunting triangle.

Small Triangles

Small triangle cuts are made using our triangle die (image right), which cuts 5” shapes, made up of a 4.5” triangle and ¼” seam allowances (The corners are pre-notched to eliminate the need to cut off dog ears, and to help lining up for sewing).  We sell these triangles in pairs, order x1 and get 2 triangles, x2 and get 4 triangles etc..

Two shapes from this die sewn together create a 5" square raw edge to raw edge, and finish to 4 1/2" square after being sewn to adjacent shapes.

Large Bunting Triangles
7.5" x 9" long, these triangles speed up the bunting making process, guaranting that triangles are all the same size and allowing you to buy just the right amount of fabric.
